Temporary modular unit for MUH to be onsite in early November – Deputy Dillon

  • Feasibility study in relation to the development of 50 bedded ward block at MUH;
  • Refurbishment program of some existing wards to be completed in November

Fine Gael TD, Alan Dillon, has welcomed confirmation that the long-awaited temporary modular unit planned for Mayo University Hospital is progressing and due to be onsite by early November. In the interim, a feasibility study is taking place with Saolta Healthcare Group and the HSE regarding the development of a 50 bedded ward block at MUH.

Deputy Dillon said ” The delivery of the temporary modular unit has been a key priority of mine since been elected. I understand the huge pressures experienced on our emergency department in recent years and this welcomed news will significantly reduce the risk of overcrowding and provide much needed cross contamination measures for patients admitted to MUH.

Deputy Dillon said: “While I very much welcome the increase in working space at Mayo University Hospital as a result of the temporary modular unit, it is important to see work also taking place on a longer-term solution.  Ensuring a successful outcome on the feasibility study for a 50 bedded ward block is the ultimate goal to ensure the hospital the capacity to continue providing excellent care for the people of Mayo and surrounding counties.”

“Mayo University Hospital has witnessed a lengthy period without any COVID-19 related admissions up until recently which serves as a reminder that we must not be complacent in our obligations to limit the spread of this virus.  The people of Mayo have made significant sacrifices to protect their communities and loved ones, and it is important that these additional resources are provided to Mayo University Hospital to ensure a high level of preparedness for the winter months.”

Deputy Dillon concluded: “In recent months, various other improvement works have been progressing at the hospital including Electrical Upgrade Works with the provision of a new energy centre along with the installation of additional generator capacity.  Other improvements include a reconfiguration and upgrade to the Hospital Sterile Services Department, as well as replacement of the existing autoclave equipment and building reconfiguration works to achieve compliance with the latest decontamination standards.
