03 May €626,250 for 8 Mayo Piers and Harbours
Funding has been announced for eight piers and harbours in Mayo under a multi-million capital investment package sanctioned by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
Welcoming the funding Deputy Alan Dillon said €626,250 will be invested in the following piers and harbours: Porturlin Harbour, Purteen Harbour, Roigh Pier, Rinroe Pier, Killerduff Pier, Belderrig Pier, Kilcummin Harbour and Mulranny, as well as €202,500 for two west Sligo piers – Easkey and Aughris.
Deputy Dillon said “this funding, for ongoing maintenance and development of piers and harbours, is crucial for ensuring their long term sustainability. Our local fishing industry depends so much on this infrastructure. Some of the funding is also being set aside for the leisure marine development of our piers and harbours, which are so integral to our local tourism industry. People on the Wild Atlantic Way are drawn to the water and these ports and their heritage, which would disappear if they didn’t try to preserve it.”
- Porturlin Harbour has been allocated an overall funding package of €200,000 for improvement works
- Purteen Harbour €45,000 for remedial works to the slipway
- Roigh €70,000 for remedial works on the pier
- Rinroe €60,000 for safety improvement works
- Killerduff Pier €60,000 towards the removal of rocks and debris from the harbour area, repairs to the slipway and breakwater wall
- Belderrig €150,000 for safety improvement works, including replacement of existing winch system, ladders and railings
- Kilcummin €100,000 for repairs to the old breakwater wall and safety works to the slipway and pier
- Mulranny, €150,000 will be spent on remedial works to the pier/sea wall
