Dillon welcomes funding to repair bell tower at Mayo Church

Funding of €130,000 has been awarded for the repair of a bell tower at a prominent West Mayo Church, said Minister of State, Alan Dillon TD

The funding has been awarded under the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) for the restoration and repair to the sandstone masonry façade of the main bell tower at St. Patrick’s Church, Newport. The application for the funding was lodged by St. Jarlath’s Diocesan Trust.

Nationally over €3.5 million will be awarded to 28 projects throughout the country.

Alongside other heritage funding streams such as the Built Heritage Investment Scheme and the recently re-opened Conservation Advice Grant Scheme, the HSF aims to conserve, protect, and promote the use of historic buildings across our cities, towns, villages, and countryside.

Minister Dillon said: “Operated on a match-funding basis, the HSF promotes the investment of private capital into the preservation and rejuvenation of our architectural heritage. In addition to the €3.5m of HSF funding committed, it is estimated that grantees will invest a further €7.6m on these projects, which will support the work of traditional craftspeople while bringing many of our landmark buildings back to their former glory.”

Minister Dillon added: “I am delighted that this significant funding has been awarded to St. Patrick’s Church, Newport which has a fascinating history and is located on Barrack Hill. First built in 1918 after the old Church of St Joseph’s was demolished to the foundations, this funding will compliment the Harry Clarke windows and beautifully restored altar.

‘The success of the Historic Structures Fund is a result of the close working relationship between the Department and the Local Authorities, particularly the Architectural Conservation Officers, Heritage Officers and planning and administrative staff at Mayo County Council who make these schemes possible and help ensure that these structures are maintained and restored for the benefit of their communities and for future generations.”
